Miller Stern Lawyers LLC

On January 19, 2021, Maryland State Police reported a multi-vehicle crash in Baltimore County that resulted in the death of one person. This person has been identified as 30-year-old Luke Sounders of Catonsville. The crash occurred northbound of I-95, just before exit 49A, I-695 outside of the city, in Baltimore County.

Details of the Incident

According to Maryland State Police, Dylan Shields, age 29, was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado north on I-95 when he rear-ended Sounders. The crash caused a chain reaction involving two more vehicles—a Kia Forte and a Volkswagen GTI. Melinda Moore, 52, of Gwynn Oak, was driving the Kia Forte. Patrick Cavanaugh, 24, of Stewartstown, PA, drove the Volkswagen GTI.

Cavanaugh was taken to the hospital via ambulance, while both Shields and Moore refused medical treatment at the scene. The investigation is currently ongoing. All suffered property damage in the car crash.

The Dangers of Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is one of the main causes of car collisions, especially on the interstate. A lot can change in a matter of seconds. Drivers often underestimate how quickly a situation can escalate when their attention is diverted from the road. Here are some key points to consider regarding the dangers of distracted driving:

  • Speeding and Inattention: Was the driver speeding and not paying attention to the road? High speeds reduce reaction time and increase the severity of accidents.
  • Texting or Talking on the Phone: Texting or talking on the phone diverts the driver's focus from the road, increasing the likelihood of a collision.
  • Driving Under the Influence: Is it possible the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol? Impaired drivers have slower reaction times and poorer judgment.
  • Driver Fatigue: Tired drivers are less alert and may fall asleep at the wheel, leading to severe accidents.
  • Multitasking: Eating, adjusting the radio, or interacting with passengers can all distract a driver from driving.
  • Visual Distractions: Looking at GPS devices, billboards, or scenery instead of the road can lead to accidents.
  • Manual Distractions: Taking hands off the wheel to handle objects or adjust controls can reduce a driver's ability to react to sudden changes.

Hiring a lawyer immediately following a collision is essential in situations like this. An experienced attorney can help navigate the complexities of the legal process, gather evidence, and advocate for fair compensation.
